A little bit of background information around why you needed an assessment, what challenges you were facing:
I’d been struggling for years with focus, memory and managing everyday tasks. A couple of years ago I was diagnosed with ADHD. The more I researched the more I felt I also have autistic traits present. As ADHD feels like a dominating neurodivergent I was unsure whether to go for an autism diagnosis. I started to understand that was just as important as identifying ADHD traits.

Any previous experiences trying to get a diagnosis e.g. through the NHS and why this didn’t result in a diagnosis:
I had approached my GP for an ADHD assessment. To then be removed without asking. It was a year and a half later that I found out for myself I had been dropped from the list. This gave me zero confidence in accessing an autism assessment via the GP.

Why did you choose Portland Assessments?
I have been supported in my projects by Portland for some time so have built up the trust knowing their core values. They were clear about the process from the beginning and seemed to really understand the needs of adults seeking late diagnoses. I wanted to be assessed by a team that specialised in neurodiversity. They offered the most complex private diagnosis. A concern was my ADHD would mask characteristics so I needed a team that understood this.

How did you feel before, during and after the assessment?
I went in to it knowing it would be a big process. I already knew it delved deep which I thought grit your teeth for the greater good. During the assessment process, I felt surprisingly comfortable; the team was kind, patient and attentive. Afterward, I felt a huge sense of relief and validation. It was emotional, but empowering to finally understand myself better. I can now confidently do my own research knowing it has been confirmed. It makes a big difference in your self care to have an official diagnosis.

What difference will this assessment make to your life?
Having this assessment gives me a clearer path forward. It’s already helped me be more compassionate with myself and start exploring the right support. With a formal diagnosis, I can now access the accommodations and resources I need both personally and professionally. Having my mum be a part of this process also will help with how I explain my needs within the family.
